South Florida to interview San Jose State’s Mike MacIntyre, SB Nation reports

The San Jose State head coach will be the latest head coach to interview for the vacant USF job.

US PRESSWIRE

South Florida has already spoken with Western Kentucky head coach Willie Taggart about their open head coaching position, and will now interview San Jose State’s Mike MacIntyre on Thursday. Also potentially in the mix is former North Carolina and Miami head coach Butch Davis, according to reports.

According to sources, Taggart is still considered the top prospect for USF, but the third-year Hilltoppers coach has also drawn interest from Wisconsin, and was interviewed by Arkansas before the Razorbacks hired Bret Bielema.

MacIntyre has piloted the formerly moribund Spartans from 1-12 in 2010 to 10-2 this season, the school’s first ever BCS ranking (No. 24) and a bid to the Military Bowl. The former Duke defensive coordinator is a veteran of the Southeast region, having served as a defensive coordinator under David Cutcliffe at Duke and Ole Miss, and was also a defensive backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys under Bill Parcells.

MacIntyre was born in Miami, Fla., and his father was a defensive coordinator for the University of Tampa.

Also rumored to be on USF’s radar is Butch Davis, most recently of North Carolina. The former Tar Heels head coach was let go by UNC in 2011 amid multiple scandals regarding impermissible benefits, and was briefly mentioned for the open Florida International head coaching job earlier this week.
