The Louisville Cardinals avoided a major upset on a rainy Saturday night by toppling the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 21-17 on Saturday night.

The No. 19 Cardinals were trailing throughout much of the first three quarters, but found a way to get it done in crunch time. Louisville finally seized the advantage with just over five minutes to go in the contest on a 14-yard touchdown run by Senorise Perry.

Perry was the main component of the Cardinals offense, rushing for 119 yards on 22 carries. Jeremy Wright also provided some punch on the ground, amassing 84 yards on 20 attempts.

Southern Miss hung around thanks to a running game that chewed up 224 yards. The Golden Eagles couldn't get much going through the air, only garnering 25 yards on 2-of-8 passing by Ricky Lloyd.

Box Score Hero: Senorise Perry. The running back kept the Cardinals offense rolling despite Teddy Bridgewater only passing for 88 yards. Perry helped to control the ball with key first downs and scored the eventual game-winning touchdown.

Rankings ramifications: Louisville came into the night ranked No. 19 and will move up a spot or two over teams that lost despite being unimpressive.

Did they cover? The Cardinals were favored by 11 points on the road, and couldn’t cover the spread.

Next week: Louisville will travel to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers on Oct .13 while the Golden Eagles host the Boise State Broncos on Oct. 6.
