Although it may not be a matchup anyone predicted when the season began, the 2012 Orange Bowl between Florida State and Northern Illinois could prove to be one of the more intriguing bowl matchups.

Northern Illinois, the surprise team in the BCS, will attempt to pull the upset against Florida State in the 2012 Orange Bowl.

Northern Illinois needed a late push to even make the BCS. Thanks to a big win against Kent State as well as a couple of losses by teams ranked ahead of them, the Huskies were able to obtain the conditions required for a non-AQ team to earn an automatic berth to the BCS. The Huskies are a heavy underdog, but feature one of the best offenses in the country. NIU finished the regular season ninth in the country in points per game, averaging 40.8 PPG.
After knocking off Georgia Tech to win the ACC, Florida State opened as nearly a two touchdown favorite against NIU. The Seminoles ranked near the top of the country in both points per game (13th) and points per game allowed (sixth). While FSU is heavily favored, there are at least a few signs which point to NIU making a game of it. Florida State is 0-4 in its last four BCS bowl appearances.
