Dynasty vs. dynasty: How does Alabama compare to ‘90s Nebraska?

How would the 1990s Cornhuskers stack up against the present-day Crimson Tide? Tom Osborne, for one, isn’t willing to speculate.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne wouldn't venture a guess when asked how his Cornhuskers teams from the 1990s compared to Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide.

“It doesn’t come off very well when you try to compare a team that played 12, 14, 15 years ago with a team playing today and say this team would beat that team. Nobody knows,” Osborne said.

Nebraska compiled a 60-3 record between 1993 and 1997, winning all or a share of the national championship on three occasions. Over that stretch, the Cornhuskers scored an average of 42.8 points per game while allowing 14.6 points per game.

Alabama put together a similar run under Saban, winning three of the last four BCS titles; the Crimson Tide are 61-7 since 2008. Over that span, the Crimson Tide haven’t been as prolific offensively as those Nebraska teams -- the Tide averaged 34.3 points per game. But they were more stingy on the defensive side, giving up an average of just 11.8 points per contest.

Alabama could potentially improve on its most recent five-year run, difficult though that may be. With Saban as head coach, the program may be a national championship contender for years to come.
