The Ohio St. Buckeyes went undefeated this past season, but were ineligible for the postseason due to a bowl ban. This has led many people to ask whether Ohio State could have hung with Alabama, who demolished undefeated Notre Dame 42-14 to win their third title in four years. Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer, who was at the BCS Championship Game as an analyst for ESPN, is not one of them:

The Ohio State head coach got an up close look at Alabama this past week, and he doesn’t think the Buckeyes are on the Tide’s level yet.

“We had a good season and there’s a lot of conversation about things that shouldn’t be discussed, because it’s not true,” Meyer said, adding that the Buckeyes won’t be at that level “unless we get a lot better, like a LOT better.”
The Big Ten, which has been down for several years now, was especially down this past year, so Ohio State did get the benefit of a very manageable schedule in 2012. However, Meyer's championship pedigree from his years as the head coach of the Florida Gators and the Buckeyes' recruiting efforts have Ohio State positioned well to challenge for the championship in 2013. Whether they will be able to take down Alabama or whoever comes out of the SEC remains to be seen.
