Texas A&M athletic director Eric Hyman says he’s trying to get Kevin Sumlin a new contract as soon as he can after the coach went 11-2 with a Cotton Bowl win in his first year.

Texas A&M’s athletic director wants to reward Kevin Sumlin for a great first season in charge of the Aggies, trying to give him a raise from being one of the lowest-paid coaches in the SEC.

Brent Zwerneman of Mysanantonio.com reported that Hyman is “totally immersed” in discussions with the coach, as well as his staff, and that he wants to get the deals done “as quickly as possible”.
Sumlin's first year with the Aggies was an unmitigated success: a year after going 7-6 and losing first-round draft pick Ryan Tannehill at quarterback, the team only lost twice - to LSU and Florida- knocked off No. 1 Alabama, the eventual national champs, and had a Heisman winner in Johnny Manziel. They finished the year at No. 5 in the AP Poll after entering the year unranked.
Sumlin’s initial contract at A&M wasn’t a big one, giving him $2 million, which was the second lowest amongst the 13 SEC coaches whose salaries were released for the past season, ahead only of Kentucky’s Joker Phillips. Phillips’ team went 0-8 in conference, resulting in him being fired after the year, meaning Sumlin might currently be the lowest paid coach in the SEC until his deal is reconstructed.
