The Fighting Illini named former Western Michigan head coach Bill Cubit their new offensive coordinator on Monday.

The Illinois Fighting Illini hired Bill Cubit to be their new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Monday. Cubit comes to Illinois after spending the last eight seasons as the head coach at Western Michigan.

“I am very excited to have an experienced coach like Bill Cubit join the Illini football staff as he has always been known to have an outstanding football mind,” Illinois head coach Tim Beckman said in a statement. “I’ve known Bill and coached against him for several years. He has had many extremely productive offensive teams during his career”

Cubit got his coaching start with UCF in 1983 and received his first offensive coordinator job in 1997 at Western Michigan. He also served as offensive coordinator at Missouri, Rutgers and Stanford before taking the head coaching position at WMU.

He replaces Bill Gonzales and Chris Beatty, who served as co-offensive coordinators for the Illini in 2012. Beatty has not been retained, while Gonzales is shifting over coach Illinois’ wide receivers.

Illinois finished 119th nationally in total offense and scoring this season.
