Penn State WR Shawney Kersey transferring to Marshall

The junior left the program back in September, and will head down the road to Marshall for next season.

Penn State wide receiver Shawney Kersey is transferring to Marshall, according to the Centre Daily Times' Guy Cipriano. Kersey, a junior from Woodbury, NJ, joins former Penn State teammates Devon Smith and Derrick Thomas as members of the Thundering Herd, after they left prior to the 2012 season.

Kersey was never a particularly large part of the Nittany Lion offense. He caught only six passes for 44 yards in two games in 2012 before leaving the program for personal reasons. His transfer out of State College was essentially a formality, but this finally ends any chance there was of a return to the program.

As part of the NCAA sanctions against Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky scandal, Kersey can transfer to Marshall and play right away in 2013. Aside from the $60 million fine, bowl ban and scholarship reductions, players have the ability to transfer without having to sit out a season until the start of 2013 fall practice.
