Return of Logan Thomas shields Virginia Tech from QB inexperience

The return of the big junior helps the Hokies avoid starting an inexperienced quarterback in 2013. Here’s a look at who’s behind Thomas in Blacksburg.

Logan Thomas has reportedly elected to return to Virginia Tech for his senior season on Tuesday. Had Thomas left, the competition to replace the two-year starter would have featured a group of largely unheralded prospects, most of whom haven’t taken a snap for the Hokies in a live game.

Mark Leal was Thomas' primary backup in 2012, and took a combined 25 snaps in garbage time in two games. The redshirt sophomore from Florida was a three-star prospect coming out of high school, as was Brenden Motley, a Virginia native who was part of the Hokies' 2012 recruiting class. Connor Jessop, another freshman from the 2012 class, was rated as a two-star prospect, while redshirt sophomore Trey Gresh was not rated coming out of high school. Both Jessop and Gresh, like much of the Virginia Tech roster, are from the state of Virginia.

The Hokies have a four-star quarterback prospect in their 2013 recruiting class in Bucky Hodges, another Virginia native. Had Thomas left early for the NFL, Hodges would definitely have the talent to get in the race to replace him. However, he’ll have to wait another year to get a shot.
