Manti Te'o and his representatives were given a chance to reveal the bizarre story of the hoax and his supposedly dead girlfriend by Notre Dame administration, but passed on the opportunity, according to Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports. Te'o's party was supposed to get in front of the story on Monday, but stayed silent, allowing Deadspin to run the story on Wednesday.
Manti Te’o, his reps passed on opportunity to reveal hoax story, according to report
According to a Yahoo! report, Notre Dame allowed Te’o and his agent to come forward with the story regarding his fake girlfriend, but they failed to move before Deadspin got to it.

According to Forde’s sources in South Bend, Te’o figured out that Lennay Kekua was a hoax in early December after receiving a number of phone calls from a number that supposedly belonged to her. Te’o went to athletic director Jack Swarbrick, as well as coaches Brian Kelly and Bob Diaco, with the information, and it was decided that instead of the school releasing the information, they would allow Te’o and his agent, Tom Condon, to get in front of the story themselves, which never happened. The decision was apparently arrived at after significant internal debate by Notre Dame administrators, some of whom wanted the school to control the story from the outset.
