Curt Phillips injury: Wisconsin QB approved for 6th year of eligibility

The Badgers signalcaller has gone through three ACL tears since 2010, and has been given another year to play for Wisconsin by the NCAA.

Mary Langenfeld-US PRESSWIRE

Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Curt Phillips was granted a waiver giving him a sixth year of eligibility on Thursday, based on his prodigious history of knee injuries. Phillips is expected to compete with Danny O'Brien and Joel Stave for the starting job in Madison next season, the first under new head coach Gary Andersen.

Phillips missed both the 2010 and 2011 seasons while recovering from three separate ACL tears, all in his right knee. He was finally healthy in 2012, but spent most of the season behind Danny O’Brien and Joel Stave on the depth chart. Phillips finally got a chance to start for the Badgers on Nov. 17 against Ohio State, and the Wisconsin staff stuck with him through the Rose Bowl.

Phillips went 46-81 for 540 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in five games this season. It’s not a particularly impressive line, but the Wisconsin offense was at its best when it demanded very little from the quarterback.
