Oregon introduces Mark Helfrich as head coach

The Ducks promoted Helfrich from offensive coordinator to head coach on Sunday.

USA TODAY Sports

Oregon introduced Mark Helfrich as its new head coach in a press conference on Sunday afternoon. Helfrich had previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator, and he replaces Chip Kelly, who recently accepted the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coaching job.

Many questions from the press conference centered around how Oregon might differ under Helfrich and how the plays will be called. Helfrich said that there won’t be much “noticeably different” in terms of Oregon’s scheme, and that he plans to sort out the play calling situation “probably after spring ball.”

“We will attack in all phases,” Helfrich said. “We will embrace innovation.”

Helfrich received a five-year contract from Oregon worth $9 million, for an average of $1.8 million per season. Helfrich coordinated Oregon’s offense for the past four seasons and helped build one of the most potent attacks in the nation. In 2012, Oregon ranked fifth nationally in total offense, second in scoring and third in rushing yards per game.
