Clemson vs. Georgia unlikely to move to Labor Day

Will the 2013 season-opener between Clemson and Georgia get moved from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2? That appears to be unlikely since it would give UGA a short week to prepare for South Carolina.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney mentioned that his team’s season-opener against Georgia could potentially be moved to Labor Day, but that appears to be an unlikely scenario given that the Bulldogs are jumping right into conference play the following weekend.

A move to Labor Day would give UGA a short week to prepare for division rival South Carolina, while Clemson would have a short week to prepare for non-conference patsy South Carolina State. UGA understandably might be reluctant to move the season-opener given the nature of its schedule. Georgia athletics director Greg McGarity said he hasn’t heard about any plans to move the Clemson game to Monday.

Both Georgia and Clemson are coming off strong 2012 seasons. The Bulldogs won the SEC East and came close to beating Alabama in the SEC title game, which would have earned them a spot in the 2013 BCS Championship game. Clemson finished the season at 11-2, with a season-ending victory over LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
