New Mexico State coach could leave for NFL job

Dewayne Walker is leaving New Mexico State for the NFL, as the coach will take an assistant coaching job after going 1-11 this year with the Aggies.

John Reed-US PRESSWIRE

Dewayne Walker will reportedly leave New Mexico State for an assistant job in the NFL, according to Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports.

There had been earlier reports via @FootballScoop that a non-BCS head coach would be leaving the college ranks for a job in the pros. It appears that coach is Walker, the 52-year-old coach of the Aggies. Feldman reported that offensive coordinator Doug Martin would likely take over for Walker.

Walker hasn’t done a great job with New Mexico State, who have a 10-40 record under him and have never won more than four games in a season, never having a winning year - although to be fair, they haven’t had a winning year since 2002. This past year, the Aggies went 1-11, as well as 0-6 in conference. Walker has NFL experience - he served seven years for the New England Patriots, New York Giants, and Washington Redskins between 1998 and 2005 - but its not clear who he’ll coach for in the NFL. <script src="http://player.ooyala.com/player.js?embedCode=ZsMTRpODpF6_qMCpTSVe5-EHESMFh0qf&height=360&videoPcode=NjbnY6cqXQpbxFYNiGvAWdDbaOEM&width=640"></script><noscript><object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" id="ooyalaPlayer_11359425_1358466725" width="640" height="360" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/swflash.cab"><param name="movie" value="http://player.ooyala.com/player.swf?embedCode=ZsMTRpODpF6_qMCpTSVe5-EHESMFh0qf&version=2" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="flashvars" value="embedType=noscriptObjectTag&embedCode=ZsMTRpODpF6_qMCpTSVe5-EHESMFh0qf&videoPcode=NjbnY6cqXQpbxFYNiGvAWdDbaOEM" /><embed src="http://player.ooyala.com/player.swf?embedCode=ZsMTRpODpF6_qMCpTSVe5-EHESMFh0qf&version=2" bgcolor="#000000" width="640" height="360" name="ooyalaPlayer_11359425_1358466725" align="middle" play="false" loop="false" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashvars="embedCode=ZsMTRpODpF6_qMCpTSVe5-EHESMFh0qf&videoPcode=NjbnY6cqXQpbxFYNiGvAWdDbaOEM" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></object></noscript>
