New Houston Cougars football stadium to seat 40,000-plus

The new 40,000-plus seat facility will replace Robertson Stadium, which had been in use since 1942.

University of Houston

The University of Houston will break ground on its new football stadium on Feb. 8, with the venue set to be ready for the 2014 football season. The stadium will be able to hold at least 40,000 people, more than the 32,000 capacity of the Cougars’ former home, Robertson Stadium, and have 26 luxury suites. The east end of the stadium will contain a performance hall for the band, as well as classrooms and the ticket office. The entire project will cost an estimated $105 million.

Robertson Stadium, originally constructed in 1942, had been renovated four times in its lifetime, most recently in 2006. The stadium was demolished back in December, and the new stadium will be constructed on the same site. The Cougars are expected to play their 2013 home games at Reliant Stadium, the home of the Houston Texans, but nothing official has been announced yet.

The Cougars went 5-7 in 2012 in their first season under head coach Tony Levine, and will make the jump to the Big East for the 2013 season.
