Pep Hamilton, Virginia Tech reportedly meeting about OC job

Virginia Tech wants Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton to take the same position under Frank Beamer, hoping he can make a Hokies offense that sputtered this past season despite having talent more successful in 2013.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are reportedly trying to lure offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton away from Stanford, as CBS' Bruce Feldman reports the assistant coach will meet Monday with Hokies brass about a potential move to take the same position in Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech’s offense has been less-than-stellar under Brian Stinespring, who has held the job since 2002. Although Stinespring is still in charge, its widely presumed that the Hokies are looking for new offensive strategy after an offense with highly-touted quarterback Logan Thomas sputtered, finishing 83rd in the country in points scored this past season.

Hamilton would be a great fit for the Hokies: he runs a pro-styled offense heavy on play-action and tight ends that would fit well with head coach Frank Beamer, and has done it with success. With Andrew Luck, Stanford was sixth in the nation in scoring. Although they had a major dropoff this year as they tried to win games with freshmen Josh Nunes and Kevin Hogan under center, they scored enough points to win a Pac-12 title and the Rose Bowl, while the Hokies went 6-6 with an ugly 13-10 win in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Thomas could be back next year if he decides not to enter the NFL draft, and would likely be more successful under Hamilton.

Beamer will remain the head coach at Virginia Tech, so the only reason Hamilton would be enticed to come would be more money.
