Alabama’s Amari Cooper: Freshman star’s stats, highlights and more

Cooper could be one of the impact players on the offensive side of the ball for Alabama on Monday night.

Kevin C. Cox

Alabama freshman wide receiver Amari Cooper had a strong season in what was his first year at the collegiate level, and as he prepares to for what he hopes will be a good effort in the 2013 BCS Championship game, he has some memorable plays to look back on.

One of them came in the SEC Championship game against Georgia -- it was a touchdown pass from A.J. McCarron to Cooper late in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference in the contest. Cooper finished that game with 127 yards on seven receptions.

For the season, Cooper caught 53 passes for 895 yards and nine touchdowns. He leads the Crimson Tide in all three categories and is the only player on the team with more than 500 yards receiving. Cooper and the Alabama passing game will be a challenge for Notre Dame’s defense because the Tide run the ball well and they use play-action effectively. And they’re playing behind an offensive line that is one of the best Notre Dame will see this season.

Cooper’s production as a true freshman earned him recognition from a number of outlets. He was named a freshman All-American by Sporting News, College Football News and the Football Writers Association of America. He also made the SEC’s All-Freshman team.

Prior to enrolling at Alabama, Cooper was considered one of the top wide receiver prospects in the class of 2013. It did not take him long to deliver on that promise at a high level, and he appears to have a bright future as a go-to guy for Alabama in the coming years. He’s even getting early attention from NFL Draft analysts.
