A.J. McCarron injury: Alabama QB suffers charley horse

Quarterback A.J. McCarron of the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a Charley horse injury that required assistance from the trainer on the sidelines after absorbing a hit from two Notre Dame defenders in the BCS title game.

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The Alabama Crimson Tide are rolling over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the efficiency of quarterback A.J. McCarron has had a lot to do with it. McCarron has completed eight of his first ten passes for 112 yards and also thrown a touchdown, as he helped conduct three straight scoring drives for the Tide en route to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

McCarron seemed to tweak something after a quarterback scramble where he got sandwiched in between two lunging Notre Dame defenders. McCarron was seen on the sideline having his leg attended by an Alabama trainer. Tom Rinaldi of ESPN reports that it was a Charlie Horse and was causing a bit of a hitch in McCarron's movement. McCarron would come back in on the next drive and complete his first pass, then throw three straight incompletions. The third of those incompletions was nearly a huge connection downfield with Amari Cooper that would have been Alabama's fourth touchdown. The Tide would end up punting.
