Devin Burns transferring from Maryland

The wide receiver turned quarterback looked to be the odd man out at quarterback next season.

Mitch Stringer-US PRESSWIRE

Quarterback Devin Burns will transfer out of Maryland, according to Terrapin Times and InsideMDSports' Jakob Engelke. The sophomore was just one of a host of Maryland quarterbacks that suffered season ending injuries this past year, which ended with linebacker Shawn Petty going under center as an emergency quarterback. Burns, C.J. Brown, Perry Hills, and Caleb Rowe all suffered season ending injuries in 2012, a season in which the Terps' 4-8 record almost seems impressive considering the circumstances.

Burns was likely to be the odd man out this coming season after stepping in to fill a hole at quarterback created by a rash of injuries. He stepped into the role after volunteering to make the switch from wide receiver, but suffered a Lisfranc injury, ending his season. With Brown, Hills and Rowe all returning from their injuries, and transfer Ricardo Young entering the mix, Burns’ chances of finding significant playing time at the quarterback spot were diminished.

It’s yet unknown where Burns will end up. He could transfer to another Division 1 school, but would have to sit out a year -- he already used his redshirt year in 2010, as well. He could also transfer down a level and play immediately.
