Cal CB Steve Williams declares for 2013 NFL Draft

Cornerback Steve Williams surprised many by announcing Tuesday that he would leave Cal early for the 2013 NFL Draft, joining his teammate Keenan Allen amongst early entries.

Cornerback Steve Williams will leave Cal a year early, as the school announced Tuesday that the junior would be forgoing his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL Draft.

Williams was a two-year starter at Cal, and was a Pac-12 honorable mention this past season with three interceptions, 10 bass breakups, and 13 passes defended. As California Golden Blogs writes, the 5-foot-10 cornerback wasn’t necessarily expected to go pro, but the junior did have the strongest year of his career in 2012. He could get selected in a later round, and NFLDraftScout had Williams ranked as the No. 24 cornerback in his class.

In addition to the obvious coaching change with Sonny Dykes coming in at Cal, there’s going to be a lot of shakeup in the defensive backfield. With Williams gone, both of the Golden Bears’ starting corners from the 2012 campaign are gone.

Also leaving Cal early was wide receiver Keenan Allen, although he announced his decision nearly a month ago after the end of Cal's 3-9 season. Unlike Williams, Allen is widely expected to be one of the top players selected Cal-cornerbackat his position.
