Bowling Green vs. Mississippi State final score: Bulldogs hang on for 21-20 victory

Mississippi State got a scare from Bowling Green, but the Bulldogs were able to come away with the win.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

It may not have been pretty, but the Mississippi State Bulldogs improved to 3-3 on the season with a 21-20 win against Bowling Green.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start with a touchdown on their opening possession. Dak Prescott put Mississippi State up 14-3 later in the first quarter when he broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run. While it looked like it was going to be all Mississippi State early, the Bulldogs scored just seven points in the final three quarters with Bowling Green playing its way back into the game.

The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter before the Falcons connected on a 45-yard field goal as the half expired. Bowling Green made it 10 unanswered points with 76-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter. From there, the offenses were unable to capitalize.

Mississippi State drove to the Bowling Green 8-yardline, but failed to convert a 4th-and-3 and gave the ball back on downs. The Falcons needed a field goal to pull off the upset, but were unable to capitalize, giving the ball back on downs after driving near midfield.

Bowling Green had one final chance after taking over with three seconds to play. Its last-ditch effort came up short and the Bulldogs held on for the win.
