VIDEO: Jubilant Texas A&M douses and awards ball to clutch kicker

After a game-winning kick, the Aggies’ kicker (once a goalkeeping prospect for the United States) gets awarded the team’s first game ball of the season.

Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

Texas A&M improved to 5-1 with a hard-fought 41-38 road win over Ole Miss Saturday night, coming back from a 38-31 fourth-quarter deficit to win on a 33-yard Josh Lambo field goal as time expired. Lambo's story is a great one, and after the game, coach Kevin Sumlin honored him with the game ball.

It took everybody to win this game, okay? You guys went up and down, you guys kept fighting, kept doing everything, giving us a chance at the end. Offense, defense, special teams, all that, but because of some new legislation, I’m going to hand out the first game ball of the year to a guy, a guy who was playing professional soccer a year ago. A guy who answered the call, a guy who’s bounced back, kept toiling, and a guy who won the damn game tonight!

A walk-on, Lambo was a former goalkeeper for FC Dallas in the MLS, but mostly played for FC Tampa Bay in the NASL on loan. He has six caps with various US international youth teams, including four with the U20 squad during the youth team's World Cup appearance in Egypt. He joined Texas A&M's football team in 2012, and took over for Taylor Bertolet as the team's starting kicker during their Week 4 win over SMU.

After the game, star quarterback Johnny Manziel ran straight for Lambo, hugging him on the field.
