Oregon, Nebraska will play football series in 2016-17

Two elite programs schedule a home-and-home.

Jonathan Ferrey

Update: If Scott Frost leaves for the potentially open Nebraska job (as speculated sometimes) ... game’s off?

Oregon and Nebraska have scheduled a football series for 2016 and 2017, the programs announced Monday.

In 2016, the two teams will meet in Lincoln, and the game will be held in Eugene the following year. The Cornhuskers hold a 5-1 lead in the all-time series, with the last five games taking place in Lincoln. The Ducks have only won once at Nebraska a 20-12 victory in 1953.

Unless the teams meet in postseason play before the series begins, it will be the first time the two programs have played since 1986, when Tom Osborne’s Nebraska squad pummeled Rich Brooks’ Oregon team.

Another story line? Former Nebraska star quarterback Scott Frost is Oregon’s offensive coordinator, which will surely make for some interesting pre-game introductions.

Obviously, it’s impossible to know exactly what these two programs will look like in three years, but it’s safe to say this will be a marquee matchup between exciting teams on a national stage.
