South Carolina will be down to their third string safety after Kadetrix Marcus was ejected for targeting early in the first quarter against Tennessee. Marcus went helmet to helmet on Pig Howard, and the officials rightly confirmed the ruling after review. Take a look.

It wasn’t the most vicious helmet to helmet hit we’ve seen so far this season, but by the letter of the rule, that’s targeting. That appears to have caused some confusion.

With Marcus missing the rest of the game, the Gamecocks are stretched paper thin at safety. Chaz Elder is out today due to a concussion, and without Marcus, reserve safety T.J. Gurley will step in and play a lot of snaps. Exploiting that may be Tennessee’s best hope at beating the Gamecocks.
