Tommy Rees likely starting for Notre Dame after injury

Rees suffered a neck injury against USC, but it doesn’t sound like that will cost him any additional playing time.

Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees sustained a neck injury against USC on Saturday, but he has been cleared to practice and is expected to start against Air Force, per Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune. Rees suffered the injury early in the third quarter when he was sacked by linebacker Lamar Dawson, and the Irish offense struggled without him.

Notre Dame held on to beat the Trojans despite the fact that it wasn’t able to muster any scoring drives without Rees under center — in fact it couldn’t sustain a drive longer than 11 yards. Rees finished the contest 14-of-21 for 166 passing yards and two touchdowns, accounting for all of his team’s points.

On the season, Rees has thrown for 1,660 yards while averaging 7.4 yards per attempt. He has 15 touchdown passes through seven games, putting him on pace to surpass the career high of 20 touchdown passes he set in 2011.

The Irish return to the field against Air Force at 5 p.m. ET this weekend.
