The Bulldogs come in at 6-0, and if they can run the table, they’ll likely earn themselves an at-large bid to a BCS bowl game. That would be quite the accomplishment for second-year coach Tim DeRuyter and the coaching staff after an up-and-down season in 2012.
As for San Diego State, the Aztecs have won three in a row after dropping their first three games of the season. Going up against one of the better offenses in the country, SDSU’s defense will be put to the test. They should have a solid home crowd behind them, but they’ll need to play a mistake-free football game if they hope to pull the major upset.
The numbers
Rankings and records: Fresno State entered the BCS rankings at No. 17 last Sunday. San Diego State (3-3) wouldn’t move into the top-25 with a win, but it would certainly help their résumé should they become bowl eligible.
Vegas: Fresno State opened as a 9.5-point favorite, according to Odds Shark. The over/under opened at 62.
Weather: Here’s a shocker: it’ll be a beautiful night for football in San Diego. Look for temperatures to be in the mid-60s at kickoff with clear skies and a light breeze.
Three names to know
Derek Carr: Carr is the engine behind Fresno State’s offense which ranks 5th nationally in scoring. The senior QB has thrown for 2,276 yards, 23 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season.
Davante Adams: Adams is Carr's favorite target, and the numbers reflect it; the sophomore wideout leads the team with 717 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 60 receptions.
Quinn Kaehler: Kaehler replaced Adam Dingwell as the starting quarterback after a rough start to the season. He's played well since taking over in week two, throwing for 1,231 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions.
Two things at stake
If Fresno State keeps winning, the Bulldogs are likely to get a spot in a BCS bowl game. It’s really that simple at this point.
A win for San Diego State would be huge for the program and could even rank as one of the most significant victories in school history. A win would also go a long way toward the Aztecs’ quest for a 2013 bowl game.
