The Bears rank in the Top 10 in the nation in rushing offense, passing offense, points scored and points allowed. They’ve gone on an absolute tear in their early schedule, scoring at least 69 points in five of their first six games (all wins), and never really threatened by what has been, admittedly, a pretty weak schedule.
The level of difficulty likely won’t be amped up this weekend against Charlie Weis’s poor Kansas program, which stands at 2-4 with wins over South Dakota and Louisiana Tech. They lost to Rice in non-conference play, and have not been within 10 of any of their three conference losses (including a 54-16 home drubbing to Texas Tech).
The numbers
Rankings and records: Baylor is ranked No. 8 in the BCS, No. 6 in the AP Poll, No. 5 in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 5 in the Harris Poll. The Bears hold an 8-4 all-time lead in the series, and have won the last three games between the two schools.
Vegas: The Bears are a 34.5-point road favorite, with an over/under of 66 points.
Weather: Low 60s and sunny.
Three names to know
Bryce Petty. Baylor's quarterback is averaging an astounding 14 yards per attempt, with 20 total touchdowns against just one interception through six games.
Lache Seastrunk. The Bears' running back has been nearly as explosive as their passing game, averaging 9.2 yards per rush with 10 touchdowns.
Ben Heeney. Kansas's top player has been Heeney, a junior who has 43 tackles, two interceptions, seven tackles for a loss, two sacks and two passes broken up this season. If he can make some plays to stop the Baylor offense, the Jayhawks may stay in it for more than a quarter.
Two things at stake
With the tough part of their schedule coming up, Baylor needs to continue their momentum with a blowout win over a poor Jayhawk team.
A win for Kansas would at least bring a bowl berth back into the realm of possibility.
