Should Texas’ Mike Davis be suspended for this low blow vs. Iowa State?

After a targeted low blow on an Iowa State defender, could the Texas wide receiver be reprimanded by the conference?

David Purdy

Thursday night’s Iowa State-Texas game was filled with controversy, leaving Cyclones head coach Paul Rhoads steaming mad at Big 12 officials over what appeared to be some questionable calls in the Longhorns’ favor.

One of the more dubious decisions by the referees was one they didn't make, however, when they elected not to throw Texas wide receiver Mike Davis out of the game after an inexcusable low blow on Deon Broomfield.

A 15-yard penalty was called, but Davis remained in the game and was instrumental to the Longhorns’ winning effort.

Broomfield took to Twitter to share what he thought Davis was attempting to accomplish.

Meanwhile, Davis gave a seemingly sarcastic apology.

Brown stood up for his player after the game despite likely not yet seeing the replay. He was also very animated in his defense of the play during the game.

Rhoads said he did not see the hit and did not comment about it after the game.

Whether the Big 12 will suspend Davis or not is completely up in the air, and precedent doesn’t say much. In 2010, the conference suspended Nebraska linebacker Eric Martin for a helmet-to-helmet hit made against Oklahoma State. In 2012, the conference declined to suspend Oklahoma offensive lineman Tyrus Thompson after he punched a TCU defender in the head twice.

Texas could decide to suspend Davis independently of the Big 12, nullifying the issue for the conference.

Texas’s next game is an important one -- they play Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry October 12 -- and their already tough task would be made that much more difficult without Davis. He leads the team with four touchdown receptions.
