Ole Miss is investigating alleged homophobic heckling by an audience that included about 20 football players during a school theater performance and will wait until the investigation is concluded before levying any possible punishments, head coach Hugh Freeze said on Twitter. Specifically, the school’s Student Affairs office, though other entities are involved as well.

The players were reportedly attending a showing of “The Laramie Project,” a play based on the 1999 murder of openly gay Wyoming student Matthew Shepard who was killed due to his sexual orientation. The players allegedly yelled homophobic slurs at the performers and laughed during a funeral scene.

It was previously reported that Ole Miss was investigating the report with their Bias Intervention Response Team. An additional student who was at the play told Hugh Kellenberger that he did not hear any homophobic slurs at the performance. One of the players reportedly apologized to the cast, who said they did not believe the apology was sincere.
