Baylor exploded for an historic offensive output against West Virginia Saturday night, further cementing their status as a main contender for the Big 12 championship as they defeated the visiting Mountaineers, 73-42.

An incredible offensive output from the Bears brings their Big 12 hopes to the national spotlight.

The Bears started the scoring with a 61-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Petty to Antwan Goodley, and gave up a score on a muffed punt. Baylor then really exploded, with a two-yard touchdown run from Petty, a 47-yard pass from Petty to Tevin Reese and a 80-yard touchdown run from Lache Seastrunk.
That was all in the first quarter.
In particular, Reese’s touchdown grab was especially impressive.
It left the Baylor players dancing.
And dancing a bit more.
Seastrunk’s run wasn’t so bad either.
Baylor scored four more touchdowns in the second quarter, giving them a 56-14 lead and over 600 yards of total offense at the half. They subbed in their second unit early in the third quarter and eased to the dominating victory.
With 73 points and 872 yards of total offense, the following records were set:
- Baylor record for total offense (previously 781)
- Big 12 record for total offense (previously 807)
- West Virginia record for yards allowed (previously 700)
- Baylor record for points (previously 70)
- First team since LSU in 1930 to score at least 70 points in three straight games
The final score was much closer than the reality of the game, as Baylor played with their second unit for nearly the entire second half. Two of West Virginia’s touchdowns were of the defensive variety, as the Bears’ first unit surrendered just two touchdowns.
Box Score Hero: Bryce Petty/Lache Seastrunk/Antwan Goodley. When you have an offense as potent as Baylor’s, it’s impossible to pick just one star. Petty completed 17 of 25 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score. Seastrunk ran 15 times for 172 yards and two scores, and Goodley caught seven passes for 170 yards and a touchdown.
Rankings Ramifications: Baylor was ranked No. 17 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches’ Poll. It’s safe to say they might rise a bit after this performance.
But Did They Cover? Baylor was a 30-point favorite, so yes.
