Corey Nelson injury: Sooners LB expected to miss rest of season with pectoral injury

Oklahoma’s defense suffered a significant blow with the loss of one of its defensive leaders.

Oklahoma linebacker Corey Nelson partially tore a pectoral muscle during the Sooners' win over TCU Saturday, head coach Bob Stoops confirmed Sunday, and the injury is expected to force him to miss the rest of the season. Nelson is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday.

It’s a significant loss for Oklahoma’s defense -- Nelson, a defensive captain, is a multi-year starter and has appeared in more than 40 games during his Sooners career. He is second on the team in tackles this season with 27 and averaged more than five stops per game. He also has three tackles for loss and an interception return for a touchdown.

Redshirt junior Aaron Franklin and true freshman Dominique Alexander were listed behind Nelson at outside linebacker on Oklahoma's depth chart last week and may be the most likely candidates to step into the void. Franklin has appeared in 26 games for the Sooners but has never made a start. Alexander has appeared in four games this year. The two have 11 tackles between them in 2013.
