Ohio State’s last-second score cost bookies $100 million, expert says

Turns out a lot of people gamble on sports!

Saturday night’s B1G showdown between Ohio State and Northwestern ended in dramatic fashion, as a last-ditch hook-and-ladder attempt by the Wildcats turned into a bizarre game-ending touchdown for the Buckeyes.

With five seconds to go and trailing by four on their own eight-yard line, Kain Colter threw it to the right side. Three different Northwestern receivers lateraled the ball, hoping for some historic late-game magic, but the ball finally broke free and bounced toward the end zone, where Ohio State was able to easily pounce on it for the score.

The score also covered the spread, costing bookies an absurd amount of coin (h/t CBS Sports).

The Buckeyes were a 5.5-point road favorite, and the final touchdown swung the game from 34-30 Ohio State to 40-30. ABC announcer Brent Musburger immediately commented on the cover, noting vaguely that many people around the world were affected emotionally by the score.
