Houston starting QB David Piland quitting football because of concussions

The junior is scheduled to graduate at the end of the fall semester.

Houston quarterback David Piland is calling it quits on his playing career because of multiple concussions, the school announced Tuesday. Piland hadn't played in a game for the Cougars since suffering a head injury on Sept. 7 against Temple.

Houston’s medical staff concluded that it would be best if Piland gave up football.

“One of my lifelong dreams and goals has been to play quarterback at the collegiate level and thanks to the University of Houston, I’ve been able to accomplish one of my dreams and meet one of my goals,” Piland said in a statement. “It was not easy to hear that I can no longer play the game that I love, but I know that our medical staff has my best interests in mind.”

Piland, who is set to graduate in December with a degree in business administration, ends his Houston career with some impressive career marks. He is seventh in school history in a number of categories, including passing yardage, touchdown passes and completions. He made 21 starts for the Cougars.
