VIDEO: CBS’ Verne Lundquist jabs Brent Musburger over Katherine Webb incident

The CBS broadcaster calls out ESPN’s college football man over comments made during last year’s national title game.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Spor

Late in the fourth quarter of Alabama’s 38-17 dominating win over LSU, the CBS camera crew focused their attention on Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron’s contingent in the crowd — namely his mother, Dee Dee Bonner, and his girlfriend, Katherine Webb. What happened next was some playful chiding from Verne Lundquist to former broadcast partner Brent Musburger.

Lundquist introduced both Bonner and Webb, and then moved right back on to the football game. After about five seconds of awkward silence, booth partner Gary Danielson said “That’s it? That’s all your going to say?” Danielson was hinting at ESPN’s Brent Musburger’s inappropriate comments about Webb made during the broadcast of last year’s national title game.

Lundquist responded by saying “you’re darn right. I don’t work for that four-letter network. Discretion.” The broadcasters seemed to intend the comments to be playful, as Danielson laughed while Lundquist made his comments, but we will wait and see if ESPN or Musburger issue a response.
