Saturday's conference championship game between Winston Salem State and Virginia State has been canceled after WSSU quarterback Rudy Johnson was allegedly assaulted in an on-campus bathroom by Lamont Britt, a VSU running back.

Winston Salem State’s starting quarterback was allegedly assaulted in a bathroom by a Virginia State running back.

Johnson was in the same bathroom as a couple Virginia State players when an altercation broke out. He suffered a swollen eye and a laceration above his eye, according to the Sports Xchange. Britt was arrested on Friday for misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury. No other arrests are expected to be made.
“We don’t know a lot of what happened, but we do know our starting quarterback, Rudy Johnson, was beaten up,” Winston-Salem chancellor Donald Reaves said, “and he didn’t beat himself up.”
Many of the Winston Salem State players were upset by their quarterback being attacked and having their chance at a third-straight conference title taken away.
“Everything these guys have been working for has been shattered,” [graduate assistant Kam] Smith said. “So now I’m wondering how these guys will react when they get back to practice and how their attitudes will be. It’s a situation I’ve never heard of, and it’s kind of mind-blowing so I’m in shock right now.”
Budd Hudson, a Virginia State player, tweeted this shortly after initial reports of the attack surfaced.

Virginia State coach Latrell Scott also said the reports are not true.
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association has not said when (if ever) the game will be made up. Last season, Winston Salem State lost the Division-II championship game to Valdosta State.
