West Virginia vs. Kansas 2013 results: Jayhawks crush reeling Mountaineers

Kansas got their first conference win since 2010, ending West Virginia’s hopes of bowl eligibility this season.

The Kansas Jayhawks delivered one of the bigger upsets of the 12 p.m. slate, defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers, 31-19. The game was Kansas' first conference win since beating Colorado in 2010. The Mountaineers suffered their fifth loss in the last six games.

The Mountaineers took a 7-0 lead early in the game, but it was all downhill from there as the Jayhawks scored 31 unanswered points. West Virginia's defense had no answer for Kansas' rushing attack, which racked up 315 yards on the ground. Kansas was in control for most of the game despite a one-dimensional offense--Montell Cozart finished with just 61 passing yards. Kansas scored more than 20 points in a game for the first time this season.

James Sims all but put the game away in the third quarter with his third touchdown of the day. WVU scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score look respectable, but the effort was far too little by that time. The Jayhawks are still just 3-7 on the season, but fans are delighted with their first conference win in almost three years.

Box Score Hero: James Sims was the biggest difference maker, racking up 211 yards and three touchdowns.

Rankings Ramifications: The Mountaineers dropped to 4-7 and will not go bowling this season.

But Did They Cover? West Virginia was favored by 6.5 points, according to OddsShark. They failed to cover by losing.
