The playoffs are expanding from 16 team to 24 this season, with 11 conference champions joined by 13 at-large bids. North Dakota State has to be considered the favorite -- they’re the unanimous top team in the poll as an undefeated 10-0, although Eastern Illinois and Eastern Washington should both give them a run for it.
The Bison are two-time reigning champions, defeating Sam Houston State in the title game each of the past two seasons, including last year by a score of 39-13. The Bearkats are ranked No. 9 in the nation this year, and are expected to make the field.
The last non-North Dakota State to win the title was Eastern Washington.
