Bowling Green vs. Buffalo final results: Falcons to face NIU for MAC title

The Falcons completely dominated the second half to wrap up the MAC’s East division and to have a shot at undefeated Northern Illinois next week.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

In a game that served as the de facto championship for the MAC’s East Division, Bowling Green cruised to a 24-7 win over Buffalo and now has a chance to face Northern Illinois in the conference title game next week.

Buffalo took a 7-3 lead into halftime, but Bowling Green completely dominated the second half with 21 unanswered points and forcing a key turnover midway through the fourth quarter to just about wrap up the division title.

BGSU's sophomore quarterback Matt Johnson took over in the second half. He hooked up with Shaun Joplin for a 23-yard touchdown pass to kick off the third quarter, and after Travis Greene rushed into the end zone to push the lead to 17-7, Johnson ran in from seven yards out to give the Falcons a commanding three-possession lead early in the fourth quarter.

Box Score Heros:

Matt Johnson: 11/26, 230 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT; 10 carries, 72 yards, 1 TD

Travis Greene: 30 carries, 129 yards, 1 TD

Total yards: Bowling Green - 490; Buffalo - 236

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team came in ranked, and while it was a nice win for the Falcons, it won’t be enough to push them into the top-25. What this game really set up for BGSU was a shot to knock off Northern Illinois, who will come in with a perfect 12-0 record and a chance to play in a BCS bowl game.

But Did They Cover? Bowling Green came in as a 3-point favorite. They covered the spread with ease.
