Virginia vs. Virginia Tech final score: Hokies choke out Cavs, 16-6

It wasn’t a terribly pleasant game, but the Hokies will gladly take yet another win over their in-state rivals.

The Virginia Tech Hokies aren't really a "pretty" team, and true to form, they didn't look pretty on Saturday. However, the Hokies played well enough against the Virginia Cavaliers to take home their 10th straight Commonwealth Cup with a16-6 in Charlottesville.

This was largely a dour affair. Neither team was able to get much going offensively, and they took turns exchanging field goals until Virginia Tech had a 9-6 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the first half. They weren't done yet, though, and Logan Thomas found Trey Edmunds for a 26-yard touchdown pass with less than 30 seconds remaining before the break.

As it would happen, that would be the final points of the game. Every drive in the second half ended with either a punt or an interception. Esteemed Virginia Tech blogger The Key Play put it best:

Coming into the day, Virginia Tech still had a chance to get to the ACC Championship Game. However, those chances evaporated before it even took the field, as Duke took care of business against North Carolina. Regardless of their postseason aspirations, the Hokies will take a win over their rival. Virginia, meanwhile, falls to a miserable 2-10 with the loss, and there’s a good chance this will be Mike London’s last game in charge of the ‘Hoos.

Box Score Hero:

Edmunds was one of the only explosive players in this game. He rushed for 8.5 yards per carry (11 carries for 93 yards) and caught the game’s only touchdown.

Rankings Ramifications:

Neither team was ranked in the latest BCS standings, and neither will be after the game, regardless of outcome.

But Did They Cover?

The Hokies were 11-point favorites at kickoff, so they just barely missed on covering the spread.
