Virginia Tech vs. Boston College reaction: Thomas turnovers concern Hokie fans

For the second straight game, Logan Thomas committed four turnovers in a Hokie loss.

Ed Wolfstein-USA TODAY Sports

The Virginia Tech Hokies entered Saturday hoping to rebound from a disappointing loss to Duke and keep themselves in the Coastal Division hunt. The Boston College Eagles had other ideas and handed Virginia Tech their third loss of the season, 34-27.

For the second straight week, Logan Thomas had four turnovers, each occurring at increasingly crucial times and preventing a Hokie comeback.

Boston College got on the board first with Andre Williams' 19-yard touchdown run, but Virginia Tech was able to come back and take the lead after Trey Edmunds scored from one yard out and Cody Journell hit a 56-yard field goal to end the half.

The Eagles tied it up early in the third on Nate Freese's 26-yard field goal, but Virginia Tech took the lead back on fourth-and-goal when Thomas found Kelvin Cline in the end zone for a one-yard touchdown. Boston College came right back, as Chase Rettig completed a two-yard touchdown throw to Jake Sinkovec to tie it at 17-17 before the end of the third quarter.

The two teams exchanged field goals to start out the fourth quarter, but the Thomas turnover train hit full speed as the quarterback’s pass found the arms of Kevin Pierre-Louis, who returned the interception 33 yards for a touchdown. It took a lead the Eagles would never relinquish.

Williams scored a 62-yard touchdown just two minutes later to make it a two-touchdown game, and while Thomas found Edmunds for a 22-yard score, it was too little, too late. Virginia Tech managed to get the ball back one last time, but Thomas turned it over again for the loss.

A.J. Black of BC Interruption was particularly impressed with Williams, who put together another impressive performance on the ground for the Eagles.

Yesterday BC had the daunting task of facing the 5th ranked rushing defense in the country, and what did Williams do? Only ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns including a backbreaker in the fourth quarter. There were times when Williams couldn’t move the ball, but much of that had to do that you, me, Bud Foster and everyone else in the stadium knew he was going to get the ball. As we head into New Mexico State week, remember to keep former offensive coordinator and now Aggie head coach Doug Martin in your prayers. Andre Williams is going to do unspeakable things to his defense next Saturday.

Thomas’s performances have been worrisome, but TrevorSGreene of Gobbler Country says there’s nothing to be done about it.

The biggest issue here is we have a quarterback who was originally recruited to be a tight end, and that’s a topic I do not wish to revisit because Beamer is not going to call for a change in quarterback this late in the season. But let’s just say that Logan Thomas knows this game was in his hands and he blew it. If you have not seen it, he was so upset with this game he was slamming his helmet as Boston College lined up in victory formation.
