Chris Whaley injury: Texas defensive lineman carted off after apparent left leg injury

The Longhorns’ defensive leader hurt his left leg early in Saturday’s game against West Virginia.

Texas defensive tackle Chris Whaley left early in the Longhorns' Saturday game against West Virginia after suffering an apparent left leg injury. Whaley was down on the field for treatment for more than five minutes and was carted to the locker room. Replays showed that his left leg was twisted underneath him, and the injury could be significant. Whaley was seen struggling to hold back tears as he was loaded onto the cart.

Whaley has been one of the leaders of a resurgent Texas defense. The senior defensive tackle, who came to Texas as a running back recruit and gravitated to the defensive line, has racked up 22 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks so far this season. He also has two interceptions, and has scored two touchdowns this year.

Soon after Whaley’s injury, West Virginia punched in the game’s first touchdown. The Mountaineers lead the Longhorns 9-0 in the first quarter.
