Florida fires OC Brent Pease and OL coach Tim Davis, according to reports

At the end of Pease’s second season as the Gators’ offensive coordinator, Florida has decided that it’s seen enough.

Florida's second-year offensive coordinator Brent Pease was fired following disappointing performances from the Gators' offense throughout their 4-8 2013 season, according to the Associated Press' Mark Long. And CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman reports offensive line coach Tim Davis is also gone.

Following Charlie Weis' departure to Kansas after the 2011 season, Pease was hired away from the same position at Boise State to implement a run-first offense predicated on using deception and pre-snap movement to maximize its advantage. It's an offense that SB Nation's Bill Connelly has called "ugly-by-design."

For what it’s worth, embattled head coach Will Muschamp has received multiple, public assurances he’ll be back next year.

After two decades of Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer running the show in Gainesville, this brand of football was always going to be a difficult sell. But it was something that Gators’ fans were willing to tolerate as long as the wins kept coming in, as they did in 2012, when Florida finished 11-2 with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl.

But the 2013 version of the Florida offense is much more difficult to justify, and there aren’t enough wins on the ledger to ease the pain. Injuries and poor performance have taken last year’s ugly-but-effective offense and rendered it just downright ugly.

As a part of Chris Petersen’s staff, Pease worked as a wide receivers coach from 2006-2010, and following Bryan Harsin’s departure, was named Boise State’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for 2011, where he masterminded an offense that tied for 9th in the country in total yardage, and 5th in scoring.

He was hired to head Muschamp’s offense in 2012, but struggled to replicate the same success in the SEC, despite better talent -- Florida finished 104th in total offense in 2012, and 78th in scoring, with an average of 26.5 points per game. SB Nation Florida blog Alligator Army has more thoughts and analysis on Pease’s offense.
