Glendale, Tampa to host 2016, 2017 College Football Playoff championships

Glendale will have a semifinal and final in back-to-back years.

The locations for the national championship games following the 2015 and 2016 seasons are out, as the two finalists from the four-team Playoff will square off in Glendale and Tampa, ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting.

Next season is the first with a College Football Playoff, with semifinal games taking place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and the Superdome in New Orleans, while the title game will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Miami’s Sun Life Stadium and AT&T Stadium will host the semifinal games in 2016, while the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale and the Georgia Dome in Atlanta will be the site for the 2017 semifinal games. From there, it goes back to the Rose Bowl and the Superdome, with the six stadiums rotating yearly.

University of Phoenix Stadium has a capacity 78,600, and the 2011 BCS National Championship Game set an attendance record at the stadium with 78,603 fans at the game. Raymond James Stadium, in Tampa, is home to the NFL’s Buccaneers as well as the University of South Florida, and is expandable to a capacity of 75,000.

Eight cities submitted bids for the game, including four from the state of Florida. New Orleans and Miami applied for years other than those in which they will be hosting semifinal games.
