Mark Richt: Georgia DC Todd Grantham to return next year

The head coach says no staff changes are expected for one of the SEC’s worst defensive units.

Dale Zanine-US PRESSWIRE

Mark Richt will not make a change at the top of his defensive coaching staff, as Georgia’s head coach announced Sunday that defensive coordinator Todd Grantham would return to the school.

Richt told Seth Emerson "everyone should be back" on Georgia's staff following an 8-4 season capped by an overtime victory over Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs suffered many injuries on the offensive side of the ball, and were forced to rely on a young defensive unit to keep them in games. Georgia went 5-3 in SEC play, with early season wins over South Carolina and LSU.

The Bulldogs ranked 11th in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 29.4 points per game, and eighth in the SEC in total defense, allowing 381.3 yards per game. Football Outsiders says Georgia’s offense ranks fourth in the nation in F/+, while the defense ranks 50th.

Grantham was first hired by Georgia in 2010, and his defenses performed very well in his first three seasons with the program, led by a 2011 unit that ranked fifth in the nation in total defense.
