Dennis Erickson lost Utah OC job, learned about it from newspaper

The offensive staff at Utah has undergone a shakeup this week, with former Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen taking the OC job. But the move appears to have been made without the former play-caller’s awareness.

Utah co-offensive coordinators Dennis Erickson and Brian Johnson were bumped down to position coaches by head coach Kyle Whittingham, who brought on former Missouri OC and Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, when the paper reached out to Erickson for comment, he was taken by surprise and was not aware he had been demoted yet. Which is awkward.

Utah has struggled since coming to the Pac-12, and Whittingham brought in Erickson to try to shake things up on offense prior to the 2013 season. The Utes’ struggles continued with the former national championship coach in the fold, and this demotion down to running backs coach is apparently the result. Utah brought in former Wyoming head coach Dave Christensen to be their new offensive coordinator on Friday, which creates a pretty crowded coaching staff:

Whether that works out for the Utes remains to be seen, but having that many cooks in the kitchen generally results in trouble.
