O’Brien has gone 15-9 in two years at Happy Valley, despite crippling sanctions imposed by the NCAA in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Before taking the Penn State job, O’Brien spent five seasons as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots, including one season as offensive coordinator.
The report of O’Brien’s reduced buyout comes just days after a report by NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora indicating that the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans had already contacted O’Brien about becoming their head coach. Ian Rapaport reported Sunday that at least one NFL team has reached out to O’Brien.
