Penn State coach Bill O’Brien reportedly tried to ease path to NFL

Second-year Nittany Lions coach had buyout reduced by almost $13 million.

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Penn State coach Bill O’Brien amended his contract to reduce a potential buyout by an NFL team from $19.33 million to $6.48 million earlier this year.

Schefter reports that O’Brien attempted to further reduce a potential buyout, though that is not reflected in his current contract.

O’Brien, who just completed his second season as Penn State head coach, is thought to be a top potential replacement for any number of NFL vacancies. O’Brien has gone 15-9 in two years at Happy Valley, despite crippling sanctions imposed by the NCAA in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Before taking the Penn State job, O’Brien spent five seasons as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots, including one season as offensive coordinator.

The report of O’Brien’s reduced buyout comes just days after a report by NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora indicating that the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans had already contacted O’Brien about becoming their head coach. Ian Rapaport reported Sunday that at least one NFL team has reached out to O’Brien.
