June Jones to receive extension from SMU, report says

The Mustangs missed a bowl game in 2013 for the first time since Jones’s debut season.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

SMU has ended the speculation over June Jones’s job status, as the school will reportedly extend its sixth-year head coach, via the Dallas Morning News. The details of the extension are not yet known.

Jones was hired in 2008 after leading Hawaii to back-to-back 10-plus win seasons and a Sugar Bowl berth, and struggled from the get-go, with a 1-11 record in his first year. The Mustangs won a share of the C-USA West title in each of the next few seasons, playing in the conference title game in 2010. SMU made four straight bowl games from 2009 to 2012, but a conference change in 2013 presented new challenges.

As a part of the newly minted American Athletic Conference, the Mustangs struggled even with strong play from quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who averaged more than 350 yards per game through the air. Missing Gilbert for the last two games, the Mustangs dropped both of them to finish 5-7 and miss out on a bowl game.
