3 coaches reportedly eyeing whether Bill O’Brien leaves Penn State for NFL

James Franklin and two NFL head coaches are reportedly interested in the position.

Bill O’Brien is reportedly a top target for various NFL teams, and the interest is apparently mutual, meaning one of the top jobs in college football could be opening up very shortly. Multiple head coaches are reportedly interested in the potential opening if O’Brien does take another position, including Vanderbilt’s James Franklin, David Jones of the Patriot-News is reporting.

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak and Penn State head coach Greg Schiano are also apparently interested in the position, creating a possibility of a swap between the NFL and Penn State.

In his first three years with the Commodores, Franklin has led Vanderbilt to three straight bowl games for the first time in program history. He has been tied to nearly every major job opening for the last year, and could be a target for the vacant Texas position.

Munchak was a candidate for the Penn State job two seasons ago, and the former Nittany Lion star guard could head back to his alma mater after posting a 20-26 record over three years with the Titans. Jones reports that Munchak would likely be the favorite for the position.

Schiano made his name as the head coach at Rutgers, where he led the previously cellar-dwelling Scarlet Knights to an 11-2 finish in 2006. In two years with the Buccaneers, he has posted an 11-20 record.
