A non-conference Pacific Northwest rivalry will be played out in a bowl game nowhere near the Pacific Northwest, as the Boise State Broncos and the Oregon State Beavers will square off in the Hawaii Bowl. Television coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
2013 Hawaii Bowl: TV schedule, streaming, more for Oregon State vs. Boise State
The game is scheduled to kickoff December 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Both schools had disappointing seasons, starting with extremely disappointing season-opening losses to schools in Washington. Boise State was blown out by Washington, while No. 25 Oregon State lost a heartbreaker to FCS powerhouse Eastern Washington. The Beavers responded with six straight wins, getting back to that dreaded No. 25 spot before losing to Stanford in a close one. Oregon State lost the rest of its games -- USC, Arizona State, Washington and Oregon -- to finish the year at 6-6.
The Broncos won their next two games after their season-opening loss, but suffered a one-point defeat to eventual MWC champions Fresno State in their conference opener. Boise State also lost to BYU and San Diego State, and can point to Utah State and Colorado State as their strongest wins. They also lost head coach Chris Petersen to Washington.
The numbers
Rankings and records: Neither team is ranked. Oregon State is 6-6, with a 4-5 conference record good for fourth in the Pac-12 North. Boise State posted a 8-4 regular season record, with a 6-2 mark in Mountain West play good for second in the Mountain Division. The Beavers hold a 4-3 lead in the all-time series, but the Broncos have won the last two matchups between the two schools.
Vegas: Oregon State is a three-point favorite, with an over/under of 65.5 points.
Weather: Even though it’s December, it’s still Hawaii.
Three names to know
Sean Mannion. Oregon State had the top passing offense in the nation for the first half of the year, and their quarterback finished second in the country (behind Fresno State's Derek Carr) with 4,403 yards, with 36 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.
Brandin Cooks. Mannion's top target won the Biletnikoff Award, with 120 receptions for 1,670 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Jay Ajayi. Boise State's running back is averaging nearly six yards per carry, with 17 touchdowns on the year and more than 110 yards per game.
Two things at stake
With a new head coach, Boise State will look to revive the dynasty after a down year. A win here would carry momentum into next season.
Oregon State needs a win to finish the year with a winning season -- which shouldn’t have been a worry at 6-1.
