2013 Hawaii Bowl results: Oregon State scores early, often in win over Boise State

Oregon State opened up a 32-point lead in the third quarter and hung on for the 38-23 victory in Christmas Eve’s lone action.

Oregon State used an efficient, balanced offense and a pair of defensive touchdowns to jump on Boise State and hang on for the 38-23 victory in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

The game, like the telecast, was a mess at several points, which seems sort of fitting for the waning hours of Christmas Eve. If you ever needed a reminder that college football is a trivial pursuit in the grand scheme of things, why not be reminded during the holiday season?

ESPN’s attempt to conduct a phone interview with incoming Boise head coach Bryan Harsin typified the haphazard nature of the telecast, and it started inauspiciously:

Harsin was clearly not watching the game, as Oregon State’s second defensive TD happened during Harsin’s interview, and he never so much as broke cadence in his answer during the entire play.

Also this sad little halfback pass happened:

Half-back-pass

So, yeah, that kind of night.

Box Score Hero: Oregon State’s offense was more than capable in the win, but the true star of the show was Beaver DB Rashaad Reynolds, who returned two fumbles for touchdowns in roughly 10 minutes of game time in the first half. His second scoop and score -- a 70-yard TD down the sideline -- pushed the score to 24-6 with 7:46 left in the second quarter and effectively put Boise into panic mode.

Rankings Ramifications: Boise was the only team that had any hope of moving into the Top 25 after this game, and that’s obviously not happening now.

But Did They Cover? Oregon State was favored by 4.5 points, so surprise! That’s a cover.
